Dragon Ball FighterZ Adding Yamcha to Roster?

As a simultaneously beloved and mocked character from the Dragon Ball universe, many fans likely expected to see Yamcha appear in the forthcoming fighting game, Dragon Ball FighterZ. Despite this confidence from the fanbase, hopeful players likely didn’t expect to see the character’s inclusion in the game confirmed through the anime hero’s voice actor on social media. Evidently, lacking an official confirmation through screenshots or a trailer from Namco Bandai, that’s exactly what has happened.

Taking to Twitter, Yamcha’s Japanese voice actor, Tōru Furuya, confirmed that he has recorded lines for a game he identifies as “Dragon Ball Fighters”. Given the lack of any news on a title going by that name (not to mention the branding nightmare doing so would cause), it’s clear that Furuya is confirming his involvement in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Despite this news, it’s still unknown just what role Yamcha will play in the game – although it will presumably be in a playable form on the main roster.

Most recently it was confirmed that the Cell Saga’s Androids will be joining FighterZ, with Android 17 acting more like an assist to his sister Android 18 than a full-fledged fighter – which may mean the Z-Fighter will fill a similar role. Also taking into consideration the narrative at hand, it’s possible that Yamacha may simply have a place in the game’s story. With that said, it would be very odd to exclude the battle-hardened human fighter from the final character selection.

Given the appearance of other members of Earth’s defense force such as Krillin and Piccolo, it’s clear that this 3-vs-3 fight title isn’t holding back on characters as a result of their power within the manga or television show. Even though Yamacha is canonically known for biting it, there’s certainly a position for the combatant on the roster and news about the extent of his apparent involvement in Dragon Ball FighterZ is sure to surface sooner rather than later.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to arrive on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in February 2018.
