The highly-anticipated JRPG Persona 5 has finally got its Western release date, after years of speculation saw players doubting developer claims that the game would be released outside of Japan whatsoever.
The game, which has seen several delays over the last few years, is confirmed to release on February 14, 2017, a date almost 5 months following its Japanese release. The release date was announced in a press release, alongside the “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition of Persona 5. The special edition is exclusive to the PS4, coming with a 64-page hardcover art book, a 4 inch plush of the shape-shifting cat Morgana, and the game’s soundtrack on CD.
As well as this, the collector’s edition offers a steelbook case for their game disk, a full-size Shujin Academy school bag and a unique box to keep it all in. The “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition of the game will reportedly retail at $89.99. If Persona fans are not interested in the extra loot but still want the game’s steelbook case, they can preorder Persona 5 now to get the case as part of a limited day-one run for the PS4. The PS3 release of the game will be retailing at $49.99 which is $10 cheaper than its cost on PS4 consoles.
For those just hearing about Persona 5 for the first time, the game is part of a series that spun-off from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise and features a group of high-schoolers who fight demons or Shadows, using their Personas. The games feature dungeon-crawling combat mixed with a social-simulator which allows players to bond with their allies in a social-link system, in order to strengthen their power in battle.
The previous game in the series, Persona 4, recently made our list of top 10 JRPGs which might help explain why a US release of the new Persona is cause for so much excitement. Besides this, the game itself has also made its way onto our list of most anticipated games of 2016, though it seems players outside of Japan will have to wait until the following year to get their hands on the latest in the highly-praised JRPG series.
Developers Atlus have announced that a Persona 5 anime series will debut this September, though players who don’t wish to have the game spoiled for them should wait until they’ve completed their first run-through before watching, as the show will be following the story of the title.
Persona 5 is set to release on February 14, 2017 for PS3 and PS4.
